This is just neat! Buffy and Lorne are characters who have a lot of unexplored potential, and of course you've left us on a cliffhanger here!

Oh my god, super glad you like it! I'm currently working my way through your works (in the middle of Neccessary Evils) and really loving them, so your opinion means a lot.

Sorry about the cliffhanger! I've got a lot more ideas and definitely plan on finishing it and posting to AO3, Elysian Fields, etc. One nice thing about recuperating from surgery is that it certainly should give me time to write! Looking forward to getting into Spike and Buffy's interactions and revealing their history a bit more. And I'm definitely enjoying writing Buffy and Lorne as friends. In this story I hope to explain some of his feelings about about the events of "Not Fade Away" and give him a nice character arc.

Thanks! I'm glad you thought it was a good start. Yeah, I certainly didn't intend for it to be quite such a cliffhanger, but I thought it was better to post what I had than to post nothing.

This made me finally listen to the song that this round's theme is based on, so thank you. :D I didn't even know it was from Casablanca!
I'm not familiar with the movie, so I'm sure I'm missing all sorts of clever allusions. I know there was a bar and some sort of melancholy love story (which I think you created the right mood for), and I'm guessing there were human Nazis in Casablanca? Not unlike in the real 2017...
I think it's cool you set the story in 2017. It's the distant future if you look from canon, only of course it's not the future...
I like that Buffy called her bar Mr. Pointy *g*, but I'm sad my friends were driven to drink and brooding. Is it too much to hope Spike might snap them out of it?
I love your insights on Lorne. He's wonderful! This is my favorite line: "Lorne leaned against the bar and spoke to the bartender in that way of his that always made it seem like he was taking you into his confidence, no matter how trivial what he was actually saying was."

Yeah, there were definitely references to the movie, but I want the story to make sense to the Buffy fan without any knowledge of Casablanca, so sounds like I more or less succeeded so far. And yes, Nazis definitely featured heavily in Casablanca. I'm currently debating how much I want current real world stuff to influence my version of Buffyverse events!
Lorne and Buffy aren't in a great place to start with, but I certainly plan on arcing them to somewhere a bit better by the end of the story. Really glad you enjoyed the way I wrote Lorne. He's my favorite character to write so far!

Congratulations on your first Seasonal Spuffy story - and what a wonderful start - I absolutely love your Casablanca theme and with Lorne as part of your cast & characters; for me nothing could be better I LOVE Lorne and wish he was used more often in stories. He makes an excellent character when used with the Buffy and Sunnydale group. You did a great use of the film events and transforming Buffy & Lorne into the Sam and Rick. You should definitely continue with this piece it has great potential and especially in the political climate of today.

You should check out this sentence "but she was begging to be truly concerned"

Thank you! Glad that the themes and characterization work for you. Being able to use Casablanca as my starting point has been really fun, I guess the challenge is finding the right balance between the two source materials. I definitely plan on continuing the story and, yeah, if you want to do a banner that would be super awesome!

Also yeah, good catch on that error. Spellcheck fail.

Congratulations on your first Seasonal Spuffy story! This is definitely a promising beginning. Love Lorne! And very curious what happened to get Buffy where she is now. It's been ages since I've seen Casablanca, so my memory of it is very haze, but it seems to me you've captured the atmosphere pretty well. I look forward to reading the continuation.
