It's pretty much par for the course that Spike would eventually figure out things for himself and that Buffy would be helpless in recognizing what Spike really needs. She really is a muse or catalyst for Spike because it is in being in Buffy's magnetic field that Spike can talk to "mom", become a self-sacrificing protector, and get his rocks back. That is what makes Spike, Spike. Buffy, not knowing what Spike is to her, but knowing he's a part of her life is what makes Buffy, Buffy.
Spike had spent over a hundred years enjoying every moment-or nearly every moment-of his undead existence. He had fought and fucked and hunted. Every night had been a party, full of new experiences and old alike.
And now, time stretched before him in an endless stream; meeting the sunlight was beginning to look better and better.
Spike probably was unaware that his existence had purpose, which is what gave it spice. Now, without it, he flounders. However, he's about to get the fire back, methinks.
I love the (canon) scene where Spike has figured out that he can fight vampires. It's when he gets his fire and his purpose in life back; and you've written an alternative well here. ::Loves::

even spike on a leash is better than spike cowering in a corner!

This is just such a neat take on the Spike/Buffy relationship. Of course it's you, so I shouldn't have expected anything different :)
