How to rub a dub laundry in the tub

The laundry machine died a couple of weeks ago. First, clothes got weird splotches of burnt-ness on them and then, it started some heavy, scary clunking in the spin cycle. We’re going to fix it but the part costs $200. That combined with the vehicle registration renewal fee pretty much knock us flat for a month or so.

I have to admit though that despite the financial crunch it’s caused, washing laundry by hand has been kind enlightening…maybe even enjoyable. I’m certain we use less water and electricity plus the workout is incredible. Even though the dryer works, I’ve taken to hanging our things outdoors. It’s neat how the sun provides a starch all on its own. I sort of want to see how long we can go without using the machines. It’s good to have them ready to go but I’m curious what sort of dent in our electric bill not using them makes.

Here’s my “How To” on washing laundry in the tub:

Pour detergent into dry tub.
Fill tub more than half way with cool water.
Make sudsy if not already.
Have little helper put pieces you throw at her into the tub.
Submerge and knead everything with your hands (or stir with big stick if you’re my husband).
Let soak.
Wash each piece vigorously by hand (or stir vigorously with the big stick).
Drain dirty water.
Fill tub again with clean cool water so that clothes are submerged.
Knead clothes again.
Drain water.
Pressing hands on piles - push out as much water as you can.
Wring excess water out of each piece.
Let little helper help wring/put wrung pieces in basket.
Dry on line or in dryer.

Advantages:
Aerobic workout
Conserves electric energy
Teaches you to be more conservative in your estimation of “dirty”
Teaches you to wear less more
