TV

So this TV, that's been in my family for the last 20 years, and is our only TV, finally croaked this weekend. Well, that's not quite adequate...it started dying and we gave it a little push. Usually when the rings showed up on the screen, a magnet would push them right on out but such was not the case this last go round. We sat with green and pinkish rings for about a week and with eyes strained decided to chuck it. In its place, we've put the desktop. Bill connected the computer to the good speakers and the machine, often overlooked in favor of laptops, has suddenly been given new life.

Even though the transition from TV to computer has been a little clumsy, we've already noticed a change in things. The biggest transition is not having the TV as some sort of indicator of time. Bill and I both allowed what's on when to govern when we do what we do...not necessarily because we have to see TV but because certain programs have been a part of our daily routines. We'll probably need to wear watches more frequently now.

Adele can play games because the keyboard is now at her level. I had no idea there were so many things for kids free online. We can also still watch tv for free online - we may have to change what some of our faves are but so it goes. Without the TV we listen to the radio more. I feel less encumbered to tend to media now as I did when the TV was on. The television taxed my senses in subtle but intense ways. I simply couldn't resist having that adult "contact" during my day. Everything has its cost and I'm learning how pricey having the TV all these years may have been. There suddenly seems to be more time and energy.

home, transition
