Funniest thing I heard on the radio all day.
It started raining yesterday afternoon. The power went out at 7:30 this morning. That's when my backup power supplies woke me up. I turned off the computers and went back to sleep. The power was still out when I left the house at 11.
All of downtown Santa Cruz, and presumably the westside as well, were dark. Luckily I found a coffee shop in Aptos to hang out in. Passed four downed trees on highway 1 on the drive there. A tow-truck driver with a chainsaw was taking on one of them. Two roadside signs had blown away, leaving only broken posts in the ground as testament that they had ever existed.
The flash-flood warning came over the radio on the way back. I think that's the only time I've heard the emergency alert system used for anything other than a test. PG&E apparently had to suspend repair work due to high winds. Given the kind of lousy weather those repair crews often work through, that had to be pretty bad. Highway 17 northbound was closed. More trees.
The rain is horizontal.
Passed a PG&E crew trying to pick yet another tree up off their power lines. Part of an intersection was blocked so that a precariously dangling traffic light wouldn't fall on anyone. The streets are various shades of brown and green from all the plant debris.
It's 3 o'clock as I write this with what's left of my laptop battery. The power is still not back.
What a nice day.
