GREENSBORO - Adam Carl Gerken, 22, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 29, 2008.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, July 4, at Hinshaw United Methodist Church.

Adam was born in Wauseon, Ohio, on November 6, 1985, the son of Robert and Sherri (Dieringer) Gerken. He graduated from Ragsdale High School, and a Summer 2008 graduate of NC State University. Adam was a member of the High Point Swim Club, Ragsdale Swim Team, Adams Farm Aquadragons member, ages 6 through 18. He also was the High Point Swim Club Armfield Award Winner, 2004 ( for service and leadership), NC State Club water Polo Team for four years, Adams Farm Swim & Tennis Club Aquatics director, head coach, Adams Farm Aquadragons, 2007 and 2008, head coach, North Carolina School of Science & Math Swim Team for two years. Adam was a mentor to young swimmers in Greensboro, High Point, and Raleigh/ Durham. He enjoyed helping others and participated for three summers in Appalachia Service Projects. Adam was the perfect son, fantastic brother, and a great friend to many, many people.

Adam is survived by his parents, Robert and Sherri Gerken of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, Christopher Gerken of Winston Salem, N.C.; sister, Jacqueline Stevens and husband, Nicolas of Bedford, Va.; grandparents, Carl and Irma Gerken of Defiance, Ohio, and Walt and Jean Dieringer of Napoleon, Ohio. Many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
