Gunman identified as Cho Seung-hui, a 23-year-old English major from South Korea
Cnn Says: "Cho was a loner and authorities are having a hard time finding information about him, said Harry Hincker, associate vice president for university relations."
Maybe that's the fucking problem. Now I'm not saying that what he did was right, because the massacre is horrible. I'm just asking that we examine the possibility of the word "loner" and think more about the root of this, why people are capable of such violent things.
Maybe we are all capable of horror. Maybe finding one friend can completely change your life. How sad that nobody knows what his favorite movies were, hobbies, hangouts. He was probably that guy who sat in the middle of the class, hidden, never really talking to anybody. Now I know a lot of people do appreciate their solitude, but maybe it wasn't self induced---no one ever took that time to let him know that there is love in the world. Maybe he just didn't know the possibilities of friendship, feeling, touch. When was the last time someone gave him a hug? A resident alien, far away from families and friends in his homeland, maybe there's a reason why he freaked out, aside from the normal excuses of psychological problems or medication side effects (ala Zoloft murder cases).
Like I said before, I am not by any means justifying what Cho did-- I'm not even asking that we feel sorry for him. I'm just saying that we should pay more attention to the people around us, notice that loner eating by himself, notice the people in your classes, who you pass in the halls. Say hi, at least put yourself out there to maybe make a friend. Giving someone, strangers, a compliment, about their sweater or hair, who gives a fuck. You never know what could make someone's day, what could keep them from doing something horrible. If nobody knows anything about this guy, there might be more at hand than meets the eye... those are just a few words for thought.
Let's keep those affected by the massacre in our prayers.
