How do you put a story down when it hits a roadblock?

How do you put down a story you spent years working on?
I reached a point in editing and re-working a story that I just can stand to look at it. I can pick up someone else's book and read it through. I can't wait to read another chapter. When I get back to Mix Tapes (my manuscript) I don't have the same enthusiasm. I have cliffhanger chapter endings, I have funny scenes, I have descriptions and uses of all senses, but I can't read it anymore.
I've been told by people that like the story, that I need to put it down for awhile and do something else. I over-read and over-edited it. Perhaps that's plausible.
I took the advice and printed out pages, saved everything to disc and put it on a bookshelf. I went and bought more bookshelves, because I really didn't have space to put another book on a shelf.
That night, I dreamed about the movie theater the characters went to even thought they didn't really have the money. I walked through their school. I think I bumped into a character. I thought up another scene.
I'm supposed to put this thing down and I have dreams about it. I'm supposed to move onto something else and I imagine new scenes. I should change Kelly's name to Patty, no, I should change another character to Patty or maybe create a new character.
How do you put down a story? How do you shelve a story you spent over four years on? I can't pick up because it frustrates me and yet I can't put it down.
How do you do it?
