Upon a verdant Irish knoll
I sat with you one day
We nervously plucked at grass and
With open hearts shared our dreams
While watching the storm clouds roll
Sometimes it seems like yesterday
When we swapped our Christmas lists
You read mine and I yours
We made a secret wish that forever
Our friendship would remain this way
Running furiously into the sun
Playing round' the world with you
I never wanted for anything more
Than to stay til the stars appeared
But we weren't allowed to have such fun
As time passed and we grew older
We decided to break the rules and stay
So we laid down unseen in the silky grass
It was that night atop our own world
I rested against your shoulder
We tried to name the stars one at a time
And named a few of our very own
While dusk unveiled its brilliant canopy
It was there in shades of evening light
You said you wanted to be mine
I couldn't think or form any words
I couldn't say what my heart only dreamed of
The knoll we'd claimed as children was hushed
With heart and head whirling time stood still
All were quiet, crickets, fireflies and birds
The bell on my front porch rang out
Disappointment and relief filled me up
My father summoned us with a resounding call
We bounded up like young gazelles being chased
Lost was my assuredness between certainty and doubt
"We're coming dad", and so we ran
It seemed my heart would run ahead of me
Along with my thoughts, as I tried to recall
Your every word, your earnest inquisitive grin
I'd forgotten you tried to hold my hand
Ireland is far behind me now, as are we
Still I search for magic among the stars
I never answered your burning question
For some reason you never asked it again
So I'll cherish the memory of your endearing plea
