Woodham High School teacher Benny Washington rested a little easier Monday night.
Earlier in the day, five teenagers, including two of his former students, were charged with felonies in connection with a string of homemade bombs that damaged Washington's mailbox and two others in the Northpointe subdivision in northeast Pensacola.
The State Fire Marshal's Office was unavailable Monday evening to give any information on the case.
More than two weeks after his 17-year-old son found the chemical-reaction bomb in the family's mailbox, the longtime Woodham High School basketball coach said he was surprised to discover two of the teens were in his advanced world history class two years ago.
"They made good grades in my class," he said. "I didn't do anything to those kids."
Washington said even after seeing detectives at the high school last week, he never expected the culprits to be from Woodham.
"They all ride the bus and go to class with my son," he said. "That bothers me."
Washington said he does not consider this just a juvenile prank.
"A woman at juvenile justice called and asked if it would be sufficient for them to apologize and fix my mailbox, but they have got to do something better than that," he said. "I consider this a terrorist act."
Washington said his son still is nervous about going to the mailbox.
"I asked him one day after dinner if he wanted to do the dishes or check the mail," Washington said. "He said he would do the dishes. Now what kid says that?"
Washington said he is upset that some people believe the bombs were placed at random.
"They knew it was me," he said. "(The placement of the next two bombs) was them trying to cover their tracks."
Washington said he is glad the bombers were caught but is anxious to see what kind of action will be taken against them.
"I would like to see (them get) the maximum penalty," he said. "It could have killed my son."

i took that artical from the pensacola news journal.
five of my friends are in alot of shit. i have no clue why they would put bombs in peoples mail boxes and i think their descision to do so is really fucking dumb, but they are my friends and i think that everyone is being too harsh on them. i seriously doubt that noah or jason have anything against coach washington same thing with both michaels and taylor, so i really doubt that they knew that it was his house, pluse they told me what happened and i listen to them because their my friends and ill beleive them over some stupid fbi bomb squad person. now just because their my friends doesnt mean that i want them to just get away with no punishment, i think that they should buy coach washington a new mail box, or do community service, something not harsh. but everyone else is saying that they should get 15 years in prision? wtf is that?! their fucking kids! its a dumb prank gone wrong! i know all these kids and they were telling me about all the houses that they toilet papered this summer, i even helped them with one or two houses... haha, but seriously they were doing pranks like this all summer so i know that this was just a honest prank.
coach washington calls this "terrorism"? wtf does he know about terrorism?! does he live in fucking israel or lebanon?! no he lives in fucking pensacola. since september 11 happened, americans now can just close their eyes and call anything negative "terrorism" its a society of ignorance.
so their trial is on monday at 10 and ill be back in town by then so im gonna go to the trial to support my friends. i think or society is soooo caught up in its "morals" that we forgot about one important thing... forgiveness and remorce.
they are my friends, and ill stand by their side no matter what and i hope that this whole thing is over soon.
im in sarasota right now, so its kinda strange since when im out of pensacola something big happens.
if you took the time to read this then thankyou.
