Power to the people! In workers' paradise, minion Carlos Osorio, the "superintendent of silos and storage" (hey, at least they've put the quash on cronyism) has taken the reins and dictated a price ceiling for a kilo of rice. The problem? The ceiling is just under half the cost to produce the rice. Naturally, the white rice industry is becoming somewhat less than lucrative.
Piece by piece, Chavez is ensuring that $43/bbl oil is Venezuela's only viable industry, and the country becomes a mass importer. The middle class who depend on non-oil industries will be systematically displaced, the majority either descending to the glorious status of Dependable Voter (subsistence-level proletariat: unemployed, prostitutes, Holy Grail-esque mud stackers) or expatriating, with a select few matriculating to the inner circle where they will have the opportunity to become superintendent of tire skid removal. Fast forward 10 years and paradise will be fully realized: a land with no middle class, no real work (unless you count government jobs), a 106% presidential approval rating, peace and prosperity for all.
