Sorry for the double post, but
this is really important (too).
The resignation is obviously politically motivated. I'd heard that Rumsfeld has tried to resign several times before this. I wouldn't think anything of it, except this quote from Bush: "The timing is right for new leadership at the Pentagon".
I bet it is...
Also, Hastert will not remain Republican minority leader.
But most noteworthy --
it looks like the Democrats have wrested the Senate from the Republicans. They already had the House, but now it's the whole of Congress. I know the two Independents said they'd caucus with the Dems, but I wouldn't blame Lieberman if he gave them the finger every once in a while. Or -- who knows -- maybe they'll kiss and make up and he'll join the party again...
