The 28th Amendment
Russ Feingold has apparently introduced legislation amend the US Constitution to allow the direct election of Senators when a vacancy arises: http://www.russfeingold.org/get-involved/28.html

I've only just heard of it, but I think this has a good chance of passing. Between all the bruhaha with Blagojevich in Illinois (which lead to his impeachment and removal), and then Caroline Kennedy's ill-fated attempt to butter up the citizens of New York state, I think many states will pass this easily.
Or maybe when they realize how much these special elections will cost, they'll change their minds -- what with budgets being so tight.
Or maybe they'll want Federal assistance...? Who knows.
Anyway, I'm keeping an eye on this tomorrow. I knew I liked Feingold for a reason.
