Hold on to your insulin kits, because Ima get all saccharin up in the hizzy.
I want to thank each and every person who came over last night. It was amazing, and you all rock. I especially want to thank the Twin Cities delegation for making the drive. Wanting you guys there was one thing, inviting you was another (and expecting only Neil would come), but hearing so many of you going "hell yes!" was an unexpected and welcome surprise.
Usually I'm the one to do the road trip, but every once in a while I throw a little shindig of my own. I haven't done quite as many in recent years because my last two apartments have been without walls or doors -- save the ones that defined the boundaries of said apartment. Suffice to say having such a party in a place with rooms you could actually distinguish from one another (and floor space to crash) was a big shit deal for me.
It seems pretty obvious from the term, but I think I was truly able to appreciate the term "house-warming". I had to wrap up a lot of unpacking I'd been putting off, and the gifts that everyone brought really helped to finally "settle in". This place feels like a home now.
I did not expect nor ask anyone do bring anything, but I was given many gifts ranging from wines (and tequila) to homemade bread (plus specially-made bowl) and a super-soft blanket. The one that got almost everyone's attention had to be Gemma's cake. You definitely need to take eight minutes to see the entire plot twist!

Seeing almost 25 people was pretty damn touching. It was especially rare because it was split almost down the middle between my high school and college circles. Wonderful for me, to be sure, but ultimately it was two groups who didn't really know each other and had different modes of operation -- but I hope enough in common that a good time was had by all.
Seriously, I'm still amazed (and touched! Awww...) that so many people from the Cities came. The last time I did something this huge was when I moved to Chicago just over three years ago, and the Madison crew (consisting of just about the same people who showed up last night) made the decidedly shorter trip to the West Suburbs. It was a clever tactic, because it wasn't long before you convinced me to come to Madison as well. That's when I started road tripping to Eau Claire again, spending a lot of time at the OA House and the Manor. I feel like it's come full circle, and these two usually-disparate parts of my life (and in some ways my mind) got to short-circuit. And it was GLORIOUS. Without one, would the other even be around? Who knows.
So thank you again. I couldn't have asked for a better time, or better people to spend it with. More people, perhaps. Hahaha. I'm amazed we fit so many here, although nearly all the in-town crowd shuffled back off to their homes. I'm sorry I didn't stay up to see you leave, and that you missed breakfast at Dairyland. Next time!
I'm not moving again any time soon, though. We'll just have to do it again at Renee's housewarming. Har!
