Federal Government to Toyota: "Bugger Off"

Mar 26, 2007 12:19

Toyota not invited to White House confab.

On the surface, that's weird because it's a conference about the reduction of energy emissions, gasoline uses, new technologies and other fuel blends -- areas where Toyota is currently a trendsetter. Add to that they've been opening factories in the US more recently, and they'll probably be the second best-selling automaker this year, and it seems really, really strange.

But, ultimately Toyota is still a foreign company, its profits returning to Japan. One rep even went as far as to say that Toyota "does not contribute significantly" to the US economy. ...what in the crap? They certainly seem to be contributing more significantly than Detroit does, if they're opening plants while the Big Three are cutting back...

It makes a certain kind of sense to exclude a foreign company from domestic policy issues, but given that this particular company is giving the current oligarchy a run for its money (not to mention companies like Ford are leasing Toyota's hybrid technology for use in their own vehicles), it seems ridiculous not at least admit the impact they're having now, and are likely to continue (and grow) in the future.
