As A Matter Of Fact, I Don't

I've been having an interesting conversation with mauser over on tonyawinter's journal. We got to talking about kink and how the existence or lack thereof can cause a person issues, especially in the realm of dating. I just now mentioned to him a problem that I've had to deal with on more than one occassion. I love latex and high quality PVC clothing, as you must surely know by now. I also love the look and feel of metal clothing and accessories. I'm like a big, silly crow ... "Ooo, shiny! Must have!" I am not, however, into either BD or SM (and yes, I've tried; just plain not my gig). A great many kinky folks consider people like me to be nothing more than fad-followers, poseurs, phonies. They believe a person can't like latex without enjoying kinky play. My response to that? How can you possibly call yourself open-minded when you would deny someone something they enjoy because they don't enjoy something else? How can you be so exclusionary? Do you even realize that that's what you are? It's like the whole gother-than-thou/more-rockabilly-than-thou/more-industrial (or-whatever-else) than-thou sensibility. Frankly, I am what I am, and I hope there never again comes a time in my life when I try to pretend to be anything else because someone disapproves.
