Last night was grand! I went out with Katie, who was the first person I met in NYC back in 1998. We had dinner at a little restaurant, then listened to some fantastic Brazilian jazz played by our old friend Scott and two of his friends. Scott gave up working in advertising and moved to Brazil to play jazz five years ago. Neither Katie nor I had seen him since early 2000, perhaps late 1999. We didn't tell him we'd be at the gig, just showed up and surprised him.
We left after the first set (reluctantly ... wow, their music is great!) so I could get back to Brooklyn to meet up with Patrick, who came in at about 9:30. He hadn't eaten, so we found a little place that had not quite closed their kitchen yet (yes, it's hard to get dinner at 10pm in Brooklyn ... *sigh*). I had a little salad and Patrick got their last New York strip, which I have to say was probably the best steak I've ever tasted ever ever in my life no joke. Plus, even though we were keeping them open past their closing time, the people working there were very friendly and kind to us. The restaurant is the Park Luncheonette. I think it's in Williamsburg. It's on Driggs, but I can't remember the cross street. If you get a chance, go there.
Tonight and tomorrow night Patrick and I are staying at a boutique hotel in mid-town. It's on 57th, about a block and a half from the southeast corner of Central Park. Our one big plan for the weekend is to spend a couple of hours sipping wine and nibbling fruit and cheese (froot & cheez!) in the outdoor bar at the Boathouse Cafe. With luck, we'll also get to have brunch with Tatianya, who moved here last summer from San Francisco where she was my dearest friend back in the 90s.
Old friend are such a wonderful thing to have.
