It also meant that the Avengers currently consisted of Captain America, his boyfriend, the Hulk, and two teenagers. Ororo stood, nodding. "I'll prepare to leave immediately," she said.
The juxtaposition of these two sentences made me giggle madly.
And this was delightfully fun, as much fun as MA Avengers has been (it's now my goto book for a world where the Avengers don't all hate or despise each other.)
That sentence is why this ficlet exists in the first place.
MA Avengers is adorable fluff, and clearly exists because Joe Quesada wanted a world in wich Steve and Tony could be happily married (I think they're more married in Adventures-verse than anywhere else, possibly even 616).
Oh, the wuv each other in 616 in the way that Victorian romance novels only dreamed of, but in Adventures-verse, they're pretty much just fluffily, happily married. And clearly sleeping together from the beginning of things, which means that most of the really horrible things that happened to them (well, to be fair, mostly Tony) in 616 won't be anywhere near as bad.
Which is why elspethdixon and I have decided that Tony had the drinking problem (complete with suicidalness and everything) about six months to a year before Steve was unfrozen, and it's totally the one deep, dark secret that Steve still doesn't know about.
Possibly, we have put too much thought into a title essentially aimed at ten year olds.

Because Cap makes everything better! Mainly by shortcircuiting Tony's selfdestructive impulses. Plus, wrecking yourself seems like so less an attractive prospect when you get to go home and have Captain America in your bed, golden hair and azure eyes and all.
Also because he won't stab Tony in the back like nearly all his other girlfriends. And he's way less likely to get killed.

Aw. Does he think Steve would reject him over it or something? Or is he just ashamed?

Exactly! And Tony will argue with Steve, so that he doesn't get bored, and spar with him, and be the one to make him talk about things when he needs to, and make him laugh over stupid stuff.

Mostly that it's a little uncomfortable to bring up, "Hey, there was this one time I tried to kill myself in a really stupid way." But Tony is pretty much any canon has some serious self-worth issues (not self-esteem, but self-worth), so there's probably a part of him that can't help but be afraid that, you know, Steve could do better, and if he knew how much better, he might leave.
