A movie called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was released recently. It's a classic "boy meets girl, boy fights girl's seven evil exes to keep girl, boy learns important life lessons through kicking ass" story, told with all the manic intensity of a Nintendo game on Red Bull and speed. Does the "opening weekend" paradigm apply to books? I plan to grab An Artificial Night as soon as I see it, but does it matter that I do so?

In the Bestseller lists, yes, opening week DOES matter; presales also affect that.

Very much so, if you want to make the bestseller lists (which can impact how many copies the brick-and-mortar stores order).

I thought so, but it's good to have it confirmed. Today at lunch I stopped at both Borders and Barnes & Noble (after all, the previous Toby books both came out about two weeks before the official release date), but no sightings yet.

On the other hand, I did see this.
