Does the "opening weekend" paradigm apply to books? I plan to grab An Artificial Night as soon as I see it, but does it matter that I do so?

In the Bestseller lists, yes, opening week DOES matter; presales also affect that.

Very much so, if you want to make the bestseller lists (which can impact how many copies the brick-and-mortar stores order).

I thought so, but it's good to have it confirmed. Today at lunch I stopped at both Borders and Barnes & Noble (after all, the previous Toby books both came out about two weeks before the official release date), but no sightings yet.
