I have come to the conclusion that cats make no sense.

I wandered into the upstairs bathroom in my mother's house tonight, sat down on the toilet, and picked up a book. Then I noticed the cat was on the counter.

It was staring at something on the floor. I couldn't figure out what for a second, only that it seemed as if the cat had become bored and unrolled and entire roll of toilet paper on the floor. Perhaps this is what had peaked its interest. While this seems possible, it is unlikely.

So I continued observing. Eventually, I realized that under the entire roll of toilet paper the cat had managed to unravel on the floor was a silverfish.

For those of you unfamiliar with this creature, it is small, long, and silver, with large antenna and tends to crawl into every pipe and consequently every room those pipes lead to in your house.

The cat stared at it for another moment. Then it pounced. Missed. Tried again. Continued to miss. I counted no less than seven attempts to catch the bug; all with the cat licking it's lips. On it's eighth try, the cat finally achieves it's objective, smashing the bug with it's paw.

Logic would dictate based on the cats interest in the insect and the licking of it's lips, not to mention the large amount of effort put into squashing the silverfish, that the cat would eat it. This was not the case.

Instead, the cat gets bored, looks at me, then proceeds to go stand by the door, paw at it, and act like I have suddenly imprisoned it for some horrendous crime.

I finish my business, come back into my room. I can only conclude that the cat was in that bathroom for no less than twenty minutes by itself starting at a bug.

The cat has now managed to find it's way into my bedroom, where again a door traps it. It also thinks that my closet door would be a better alternative to the door to the hall, even though it has been in the closet a dozen times and knows where it goes.

I don't understand these things.

Then again, there is a dog at my mother's house that will pick up a piece of paper from a counter or floor, study it carefully, lick it, and then eat it.

But more on this later.
