This winter break has been good so far, on the whole. I'll use a simple pro/con decision making device to sort out the events of the past two weeks or so.

Pro:

Party at my house last Thursday - This was a very fun gathering of those whom I would call the friends I still care about from high school. There were some people missing from the group, but a good time was had. There was beirut, there was corona, there was good spiced rum and vodka, there was college football in high definition. People I don't know were in my house and they drank a disproportionate amount of alcohol and then didn't talk to anyone else, but that's alright. Jesse's friend Jacqueline was cool. Jessica succumbed to peer pressure and drank. I drunkenly hooked up with someone on the couch in the living room. Peter didn't punch his car. I like hosting parties a lot.

Hanging out in Jon's basement - This is an activity in which I have been participating since 7th grade. Pepsis from the fridge, card games and xbox, and talking about worthless shit for hours, the occasional board game or round of darts, etc. The quintessential not doing anything but still doing something. Always good as the default activity.

Football in the dark - Though this didn't pan out as well as expected, it was still fun. I led Jon into a tree with a pass. Jesse bloodied his knee. Andre dropped passes to his chest. Basically, we all showed ourselves to be the white Jews that we are.

Work - This will make a reappearance in the other category, but I do like going to work. Not having a job for me is very unsettling. And I enjoy the company of my coworkers, as well as the laid-back attitude of the office, which allows me to listen to my ipod, use the internet, and wear jeans and a sweater. Also the money.

Family - I love my family, and it's been nice spending time with all of them several times this break already.

Christmas - This too will make an appearance in the other section. However, I got good stuff, and Christmas is always fun. And I made killer french toast for everyone for breakfast. OH, and I got a poker/blackjack tabletop. Just the impetus we need for the Dakota Legion to resume our poker nights.

Con: (aka me whining)

Alyssa - Well, I'm still in love with her. This was the first Christmas in three years that we haven't been together, and, needless to say, that sucked. Similarly, it was the first New Years Eve in that amount of time that she wasn't there to kiss at midnight. Also, not fun. She has a new boyfriend and she seems to be really into him, so that makes it that much harder. By the way, not for nothing, but her boyfriend is just..ugly. I've never seen the guy in person, but the pictures of him from facebook leave much to be desired. Not that I'm the next Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt or anything, but I'd like to think that I have at least a considerable advantage over him in that area. I know, that doesn't count for everything, and I'm sure he's a nice, funny guy, but still. The worst part is, I'm a total bum about it. I try hard to just be normal around her, just have a good time as friends, since she's made an effort to be friends. It's near impossible though. We make plans to have hot chocolate like we did when we were dating, and I have to tell myself a thousand times that it doesn't mean anything other than just having hot chocolate. She calls me Joshua all the time, the name she uses when she's being nice or sweet or cute, and I have to tell myself a thousand times not to read into it. And then I lie in bed and look at the phone and pick it up, wanting to call her, and I don't, can't, shouldn't. And she doesn't feel any of this at all. And I'm still a bum.

Christmas - As promised. Uncle Dave and his fiancee Dina were at her house for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Uncle Joe and his fiancee Jill were at her house for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day morning. So, Christmas Eve was way small, as my relatives Jeff, Kelly, Drew, and Ann were also absent. It was me and Rachel as the two young people, and everyone else 49+. Then Christmas Day just didn't go like usual. It wasn't how it should have been. I'm a stickler for tradition when it comes to this kind of stuff, and it just sucked to have it all messed with.

New Years Eve - I'm sorry Jess, but that party, while having great potential and some good moments, just lacked a certain energy. I stand by my hypothesis that everyone in the room could pick out at least two other people that they disliked. The food was excellent, and the alcohol was first-rate. I was going around the room the whole night talking to all the different groups that were there, but the groups never really mixed up. There was the group on the couch (Jesse, Flood, Dana, Peter), the group on the other couch (Ilya, Varun, Russo, Neil (by the way, Neil?), Mike, Sean), Alisa's friends, the roaming group of Nick, Vic, Mike Walsh, and associates, etc. Things just didn't mesh, somehow. And I didn't get drunk. And then the thing with Peter happened as I was leaving, delaying my departure for two hours. Oh, and Sara Woods was there. Ick.

Work - Well, yeah. Work sucks.

So that's my list. I could have added to it, but I was getting bored with it. I might have another party this weekend, as my mother and sister will be in Rhode Island. I'll have to charge people for that one though, as I can't afford to pay for 15 people to drink again.
