Viking Fest 2007!

May 20, 2007 13:50

Today we went to the Viking Fest Parade and fair, in Poulsbo. So time warping an experience for me, as now I am attending with my two grandsons and doing / saying the same things / experiences I had with my own kids, same place, over 20 yrs ago. . .the little baton twirling girls in their satin sequined dresses made me think of my Daughter Kat in her purple outfit, bravely marching through many a rainy Viking Fest Parade, wet hair plastered to her scalp, fierce smile on her face, silver baton raised high! And all the cub and boy scout troops reminded me of Jared and Gavin, marching along. . .and finally, the school bands made me see Sean, marching in the tuba section, playing his bari sax. .. my kids are 28, 31, 33 and 35 now. How the time does fly.

Anyway, eldest grandson Alex (8) shows up with a small stuffed frog scotch taped to his head ! I am like, what is that for? His mom and dad (my son, Gavin) say, "We don't know! He just put that on this morning. He wanted to wear it for the Parade." Ha ha!

Before the parade was over he also had taped a small Norwegian flag to his cheek and was brandishing a plastic sword he bought, with flags taped to it as well. He would run into the street dancing, sword flag raised, and announce the next "act" coming up the street . . .he was SO into it!

I am glad glad glad his folks let him be himself. . .His Dad was so much like that at that age. . .a real creative free spirit. . .such joy. . .then jr high hit - gawd! peerpressure sure squeezes so much individuality out of kids. I hope Alex can withstand it. . .I would hate to see him lose his
special spirit of enthusiasm, joie de vivre (sp?)!
