Food culture: BATTLE AMERICA vs. SWEDEN

Mar 04, 2011 10:46

One of the most common things people ask you if you're an expat, living in a new country, is what kind of foods you like or dislike in the new place and what kinds of food you miss the most from your old home. In many ways I was surprised to discover that I missed certain things and not other, it didn't always coincide with what I had anticipated ( Read more... )

Love this post--I want to try some of that Kaviar squeezy stuff.

And--where are you now?! Because I have discovered some dill chips here in the US. If you are in the US, I could send them to you and you could tell me if they were at all like Swedish ones.

Ooh, are they the Kettle dill chips? They used to carry them at Whole Foods, but then they stopped. :( Those were damn good!

I'm in the US until mid April and then I'll be back in June. That would be lovely of you, I'll buy you a tube of caviar in Sweden and return the favor!

(we can message each other privately about addresses)

Yes, kettle cooked! (Oh: but not Kettle brand, if that's what you mean, though wow, yes, I LOVE Kettle brand potato chips, esp. their Spicy Thai flavor)

I will PM you.

Yay! Cultural exhange!! You will have to fill out a whole questionnaire before I buy your kaviar in Sweden, in order for me to figure out which kind of kaviar would suit you the best!

What's Boudin?

You don't like crawfish? you poor poor man!
Herdez is not any favorite brand or anything, (I actually like Kroger brand Salsa Verde the best), it was just to show off the delicious green salsa.
Yes, the wings..sigh. In Sweden you can get them in certain restaurants (and at Pizza Hut), but you can't get them in the store for a quick fix...

haha, julmust with alcohol, that's like...root beer with vodka, or something...I imagine very desperate young army men trying to party without women around, when I envision ppl drinking it, haha...

haha, well, I love some American wings and steak, although I might be a bit of a wuss on the spice. (I like it fine, it just friggin' HURTS) I guess I'm ultimately a medium person, except when it comes to wasabi, wasabi can just BRING IT!

I cook a lot, but I have never cooked Buffalo wings as of yet, sounds like an interesting project. Wings and a tasty cold lager, mmm...

But you're still CRAZY with the crawfish. Louisiana has some of the most delish foods in the whole of US!

I adore this post.I want to go to Sweden even more now.

Funny, you can get dill chips in more places now, but I've noticed that despite everything being easier or more available in the past, different regions still have a bigger hand on varieties---so dill chips are EVERYWHERE up in the Midwest, you can get Old Bay/crab chips---but only in Maryland, PA,NJ, it seems.

Also---YES with the Turkish pizza.MMMM,I remember that fromthe Imbisses in Germany. Luckily, there's a Turkish spot here that has something very similar. :)

What a fantastic and interesting post. I squeaked at the salsa you pictured, it's hard to find here, only one store carries that brand, and it's the best-green or red-I've ever bought.

Hmm..we have it here, but I haven't tried it yet, now I have to! I merely wanted to show off a jar of Salsa Verde, which I love love love...

Fun post!

I really miss Fritos and salmon dip (you'd think they'd have that here!) and cinnamon candies, from the States.

If I wasn't in Sweden, I'd really miss the Black Monk cheese, kassler, mazariner.

The Geek adores fritos too, it's the only chip-like snack he really craves sometimes. Ah, you like the hot cinnamon candies, those are nice, but I can't have more than a few, and then I'm satiated.
I agree, it's odd that Swedes don't make salmon dip, I guess we have different kinds of "röror" with fish, but those are mostly herring based, like "gubbröra" and sillsallad. Not quite the same.
