Day 30
Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!
These are almost all ones that other people don't even notice, but they are all ones that I just like, not necessarily because they are the best fic eva, or even that they are technically very good. I just like them.
A Day in the Life - No one else is particularly interested in this fic, but I have a real soft spot for it. Maybe as it was my very first short fic. Or maybe because of the slight ambiguity about the narrator. Or even just because of the fact the title is from a Beatles song! This will always be one of my favourites.
Second Chances - Which I wrote for the Deathfic challenge ages ago in 2007, and of all the short "fun" little fics, this is the one I remember the most about. I would eventually love to explore that alternative universe a bit more. And maybe sometime I will get round to posting it at ff.net.
Inversion - Yeah, I know. That was obvious. But there was something very satisfying about that fic. I could go on about it (again) but I won't. Except to say that this is possibly the fic that I put the most effort into getting it "right", and I think that it shows. It is much more like my real writing than most of my fics are.
Urban Nightmare - This is another one that I really like that no one is particularly interested in. But I really like it. It's dark, it's non-linear (I'm very pleased with the switches between what is real and fantasy), it links to the "real world" in a way that is just so 80s! In some ways it doesn't make sense. But in some ways, it's not supposed to. There are no answers, no happy ending, just life going on, with all the unpleasant consequences. Maybe I aimed too high and failed with this one, as it's not as clearly written as it could be - maybe extra clarity would maybe spoil my point. If I had one ;)
Freebird (Ironside) - I like seeing the characters when the "show" what we see on screen stops, and this is a little look at how the Chief deals with the stress of being in his wheelchair. I'm not sure exactly why I like this story, but it was a very easy story to write, and one that I found very satisfying to complete. I think it had more to say than just the usual ironside fics that I had written before.
And finally, if I was forced into having one fic only that was The One I Liked Most, it would have to be...
"
Irregular Meeting Across Time and Space" - This was written for r_scribbles, as a D&D Christmas Present, although it took me most of a year to get it done. It was one of the most complicated to sort out too - but that stemmed from the fact I was thinking about it in the wrong way. As it was a DDCC fic, and I first looked at it, I assumed it would be a few thousand words at most. But as I tried to get it to work out, I realised that to do the idea any justice at all, I'd need to do it properly, and create a long and complex story that explored more of the wonderful possibilities.
I like it the best for a number of reasons
- It panders to my alt-episode love
- I got to play with the effects of causality (I can't help it cause and effect - Newton's 3rd Law!!!)
- I got to join in with some 'ships in a way I actually enjoyed (Having the second little "romantic interlude" was purely there for the bits of the fandom that life Hank/Sheila - but I got to do it in a cool way!)
- I got to destroy virtually everyone in the end (in a sense)
- it was written for someone else who, really enjoyed it. :) I found it tremendously satisfying that the person for whom it was written for really enjoyed it.
- It has a good twist in the end that was sitting under everyone's nose for the whole time, but no one realised!
So there we are - 30 days of fanfic meme is complete.
I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed wandering through my writing. :)
