Max Update

Mar 22, 2010 10:30

As mentioned previously, I have been trying to locate Pill Pockets to make Max's twice-daily intake of pills a little less traumatizing for all involved. I finally found them, of al places, at the tiny pet food store just around the corner from my apartment. Score ( Read more... )

Hurray! I'm delighted for both you and the kitties. Pill trauma is not good.

P.S. Hey, did you know that if you replace the "H" in "Hurray" with an "M", it spells "Murray"?

That can't be a coincidence.

Excellent news. Have you ever seen Dave Barry's column on giving pills to dogs and cats? This post reminded me of that quite a bit.

This isn't that column but it's still pretty funny and I expect you will find some amusement in it:

Hee hee hee. The punchline --how to give a dog a pill-- was the best.

Getting Max to actually take his pill was fairly painless and efficient, for me. I'd lay him on his back on my lap, squeeze open his mouth, and toss in the pill. Then --the kicker-- I'd syringe in about 2 ccs of water, which would make him swallow reflexiely. The whole thing took about five seconds, tops, and he never once spat one up. But man, did he /hate/ it.

Also, I mean... vets must know how incredibly difficult it is to give a cat a pill. It seems like they'd do their best to develop cat medications that don't have to be delivered that way, or in any way that is so difficult to administer.

Come to think of it, my sister-in-law is a vet. Perhaps I will ask her.

While you're at it, ask them how come they can't make pet pills delicious. I mean, would adding steak flavouring or salmon flavouring to a pill render it's healing properties somehow inert, or something? Why can't they be flavoured like treats?

Heck, they do it with joint meds for dogs (there are Joint Treats you can buy) so I don't see why this can't be done.

In fact they ought to do it for all medications! Only I'd prefer not to have mine be salmon flavored.
