Rage Prevents Me From Writing More

After more than 30 days, Toronto's Civic Workers' strike is over. An agreement was reached Monday, and will be ratified by the unions on Friday. During the strike, of course, garbage has piled up insanely in the city, with picketers helpfully blocking citizens from taking their garbage to the designated temporary dump sites in order to ramp up pressure on the city.

But hey, you're wondering, if the strike is over except for the actual signing of the contracts, why are the picketers still blocking access to the dump sites? Well, according to this morning's paper:

CUPE spokesman Pat Daley said the unions' picket lines are staying because the the strike is still on until the agreement is ratified by CUPE members and city council.

She added that the pickets' presence around garbage sites keeps the city from using private businesses to haul the trash away.

"I think one of our bigger concerns is about contractors going in and cleaning up," Daley said.

"They don't want anybody else doing that work."

Daley went on later in the article to point out that, as the strike will officially end Friday, many workers were looking forward to working "this holiday Monday" to clean up the garbage that piled up while they were on strike, because "it represents a triple-time opportunity" and that "many of our members are hurting financially" from not working for a month.
