The non-Canadians among you are probably unaware that our public transit service (the TTC) is on strike. Despite weeks of promises that we would receive 48 hours notice if a strike was to occur, they simply walked off the job en masse Friday at midnight (leaving a shitload of people coming drunk out of clubs at 1am with no way to get home, if they didn't have money for taxis). Union president Bob Kinnear stated (most likely correctly) that if they had given us 48 hours' notice, then people would simply have been abusive to the bus drivers and ticket takers for those 48 hours. That kind of indicates to me that there was never any real intention of giving us any warning at all.
Today our government is having a special sitting to legislate them back to work for tomorrow. All things considered, the city likely got off lucky, with the strike occuring over a weekend, impacting as few people as possible (save for the aforementioned poor schlubs trying to get home late Friday night, or we poor schlubs who have to work downtown on Sundays).
Tomorrow morning, when I get on the bus, I am giving serious consideration to telling the driver, "If I'm going to call you a name, I'll give you 48 hours notice, ya fuckin' moron."
