Last night I watched a bit of the Bob & Doug McKenzie Two-Four Anniversary Special, which was only so-so, I'm sorry to say. The most amusing bit for me was that the show was hosted and opened by our former Prime Minister, Paul Martin.
Looking very official in his suit, seated behind a large desk in front of a roaring fireplace, Mr. Martin spoke of how, in his Prime Ministerial days, he would travel all over the world, and all he would hear from people when they learned he was the Canadian PM was "G'day, eh?" and "How's it goin', eh?" and "Gimme a beer, ya knob". He related how a four-year-old girl in Peru once looked him straight in the eye and said, "Take off, ya hoser". He blames this bastardized Canadian-speak entirely on Bob & Doug.
He concluded his speech by opining that we, the audience, were only going to make things worse by watching the anniversary special and probably talking like Bob & Doug again for a few days. He concluded by saying, "If you want to enjoy this sort of thing in private, that's all well and good, but if you're going to go out and represent Canada in public, tuck in your shirt, put your beer in a paper bag, and for God's sake, wipe that doughnut powder off your face, willya?"
All of this delivered utterly deadpan.
My respect for Paul Martin just kicked up a notch.
Beauty, eh?
