So after I was done working today, I had some time to kill before picking Jeremy up from work. Since I just got paid, I ran by the bank to deposit my funds and since that bank just happened to be in a mall, I decided to walk around a bit. I happened into a bookstore and after making my selections for the day (3 art books on 3 different artists, each $1, and The Pact by Jodi Picoult), I was headed for the till when I noticed another book. 501 Must Read Books: A Book Journal. I picked it up and was flipping through it to see what it was all about. It's basically blank pages where one can fill in the author and title of a book and their own personal thoughts and reviews on it. There's even little empty stars at the top of the page that can be filled in after you've read it. It allows the reader to be the critic, which I think is great considering I don't always agree with the reviews I read online or in papers. I can give it as many stars as I see fit, that way in the future if I want to re-read one, I don't have to look up OTHER people's reviews, I can pick up the journal, find the book in there and see what I previously rated it.
After serious consideration about whether I should buy it, I replaced it on the shelves and turned the corner, only to find an even bigger discovery: 501 Must Read Books. This is an actual list of 501 books the author and editor agree bibliophiles should read sometime in their lifetime. I picked it up and flipped through it as well and found the selections I stopped on to be those I have read or want to read sometime in the future. The selections are quite good, and it excited me to no end. Unfortunately, it was hardcover (I would prefer a paperback version) and was pricier than I was willing to spend considering I was already purchasing other books as well. No worries though, I came home and did a bit of googling to find the list online (thank God for Google). And now I have printed the list out and plan on reading the 501 must read books. I won't re-read any that I have read recently and remember the plot and outcome. There are some on the list that I've read, but it's been a few years and don't actually remember what happens so I will re-read those.
So, the premise of a new journal I am creating will be about the books I read. What I rate it (out of 5 stars), and a general outline of the plot. Not enough to give anything away though. Just enough so that anyone readng the journal can get an idea of whether or not they would also be interested in reading the book. The books on the list are separated by category, so to avoid reading the same genre book after book, I will randomly select a book on the list and read that, then write an entry on it.
Finally, I'm not going to set a particular goal such as to read all books within a year seeing as how that would be pretty much impossible (1.37 books a day). I'm a pretty fast reader, but not that fast. And life happens where circumstances will have me too busy to actually pick up a book for a few days at a time. This is just an adventure I'd like to set out on and am inviting you all to join with me! I plan on reading as many of these as I can, but often I will stray from the list to another book I've heard about whether through friends, family, or movies being made.
With that being said, I ask you to please add my other journal entitled: the501
