"What will I do without a best friend?" - Cecelia Carol Bloom from the movie Beaches

A movie review for a change. :)

Some of my friends may not know this - while watching a movie, whenever I hear a phrase that catches my ear and I'm watching alone, I purposely rewind that scene for several times (my brother hates that, but he does that too. haha!) and go to the internet to research the exact lines (unless of course I'm watching it at the cinema) right after watching the scene or the film. This also applies for the TV series I usually get hooked up with. I save the lines somewhere in my files. Hence, my melodramatic messenger statuses. Haha.

Today I found time to finish watching a movie that an officemate once asked me to download for him - Beaches. It's a 1988 film about two different personalities (CC and Hillary) with different lives, careers, families, principles in life, but only have each other whenever they need a friend. It's the same movie where Bette Midler(she's a great actress by the way) sang Wind Beneath My Wings and Glory of Love. It's a great story of a friendship that is not perfect, but still was able to go through the tests of bond that eventually showed their destiny as friends.

Here is my favorite scene, when they met again after quite a long time (I totally loved the lines strongly delivered by the two good actresses - Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey):

BEACHES

CC : Well, look who’s here. (To the waiter) It's ok.

Hillary: Oh CC, I am so glad to see you! I feel awful for sending your letters back. I don’t know what happened in New York, I don’t care anymore. I want you to know whatever it was you said, I forgive you.

CC: Go home, I have nothing to say to you. (Pause) No, I do have something to say, you and your damned letters. You know, every time I open one of them, I was happy before I even read it. Just to get them made me feel important! All of your crappy stories, your big dreams!

Hillary: I didn’t know that.

CC: Well what the hell did you know?! Did you know how bad things were for me? Did you know my career was in the toilet?! No, because you never answered one of my letters! If you had only answered one! Just one! Tell me what a jerk I was, anything!

Hillary: I don’t know how to fight back, I’m not as strong as you!

CC: You took away your friendship without even discussing it with me! That friendship was more important to me than anything. I trusted it, I believed in it, but you didn’t and now it’s gone. Thank you very much for forgiving me, but I don’t forgive you.

Hillary: I was jealous. I was so jealous of you I couldn’t see straight. You did everything you said you were going to do, everything! And your talent, this incredible talent! I can’t even yodel!

CC: Hillary! What's yodeling got to do with it? You're beautiful, you're smart , people look at you! It was all, my fault!

Hillary: No, it was all my fault!

From another review:
"Months or even years can go by, but you always pick up where you left off, with ease, when you see or speak to them. You may annoy each other at times, but you will always love each other. They're always with you because you've shared so much. Some of us may never find our romantic long-lasting "soul mate", but this movie makes the excellent point of showing that if you find a true friend in life you are truly blessed."

The movie's both entertaining and moving. Great story, great actresses. It's really worth your time - the soundtrack too.

friends, movies
