In Which I Get the Weekend Off

Oct 24, 2010 15:42

Well, after maybe 2 straight weeks of working just about every day (culminating in the theft of my ipod touch at an otherwise wonderful, inspiring talk by Gail Collins), I got 2 days off! So, hello. And belated happy bday to Mia and Rachel.

The excitement at our house at this moment is the "It Gets Better" Project, started by Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller on YouTube. It was exciting, it was moving, it went viral and then out of the blue there was Hilary Clinton's posting. We cried. No fanfare, just there. And then Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Tim Gunn...and thousands of other people.

OK, I wish that DADT and DOMA were history but I'm sorry, I still see progress. Even 5 years ago I would not have predicted where we are. I listened to many of the videos and was so moved by the ones that were by kids who were struggling, kids who had lost friends, surviving family members and especially by those kids who were not waiting around for things to get better but were working toward making things better for people in their own communities right now. So, of course there's a book deal (proceeds to benefit the Trevor Project and other projects for gay youth) but the real activity is online, where more people, especially those in small, conservative towns, have access.
