So I watched the final episode of season 2 of
Lost. And may I say, OMGWTFBBQ? Lost would have to be one of the most clever shows on TV at the moment. Everything is gradually revealed to you in such a way that for every answer you get five more questions. Numerous crazy puzzles lead to other crazy puzzles and provide careful clues to other puzzles. It all appears to have been so carefully planned. My biggest fear now is that it actually isn't carefully planned and that the end of series will give us a final answer that makes no sense and leaves numerous loose ends. I figure we've got at least three more seasons till we find out for sure.
A few weeks back I also watch the season 2 final for
Battlestar Galactica. Another OMGWTFBBQ? ending, leaving us hanging on a cliff desperate for the next season. This show has restored my faith in TV sci-fi, which was badly damaged by
Firefly and the slow, drawn out death of the Star Trek franchise. The last good series was the first season of
Farscape. Battlestar manages to carefully weave its story into real life situations, drawing strong references to The War On Terror, with torture, prison abuse scandals, battles of rights vs. security and an enemy of religious zealots bent on the destruction of humanity.
TIME named it the best TV series of 2005 in their annual Best and Worst series.
Finally, the series final of
The West Wing. This one didn't end with a bang, but rather, tied up the loose ends and pointed forward to tomorrow. After seven seasons the show bowed out gracefully ending on a high note, a sensible move since no one likes to see a show run into the ground and eventually canceled because it's now just plain awful. The West Wing was easily one of the best and classiest dramas on TV and over seven years it's actually had a profound effect on my outlook towards politics and the world in general. It fostered my interest in democracy and the rule of law. Prompted me to look into how our governments work and how they fail, how the balances are put together and the impact this has on all of us. It also showed me just how complex governance is and that while everyone has the 'easy answer' it's never that simple. The only other political drama,
Commander in Chief is a pale, trite imitation that doesn't hold a candle to the real thing. Goodbye West Wing, I'm going to miss you.
