Wow, school just kinda snuck up on me and left me with absolutely no free time :| I have all of today free though, so I'm going to try to post something. Sorry for being such an unreliable poster, guys -_-;;
Yeaaaaaaaaah, I have it four days a week. A one hour lab on day, then two hour classes the other days. IT IS INSANE OMG. I feel SO SO SORRY for the people who started out knowing nothing because the teacher was all 'LULZ. HIRAGANA. MONDAY. KNOW IT >|' it was Wednesday at the time.
Yeah, our teacher doesn't speak very good English either, and she expects us to already know stuff that, yeah, we don't know. I don't like her style of teaching either...which is basically the textbook, which I don't like either because OMFG IT IS NOT TELLING ME THE SUPER FORMAL WAYS TO SAY THIIIIIIIIIINGS D: Well, okay, at the VERY end of the chapter, in tiny writing at the bottom is was all 'onegaishimasu can be added to dozo yoroshiku to make it more polite' and I was all 'WHY DID YOU JUST NOT SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?' It's easier shortening things than figuring out the longer ways. Needless to say, since I already know Hiragana and most of my Katakana, I'm already starting to learn the Kanji so it doesn't wipe the floor with me later. Though, I have to agree, as much as it stresses me out, I DO like learning the kanji and stuff. I'm hoping I get better at the sentence structure since atm I'm all '...now does that 'no' come after that noun or THAT one? aldjaflkjdf *flail*' PLEASE TELL ME IT SLOWS DOWN (at least slightly?) IN SECOND YEAR?!
Omg, I was going to take German, even went to a couple classes, but then nein, I had to drop it because there is NO WAY I would be able to remember how to spell that stuff @_@
I still think you're a super genius >_>
Sorry I totally spammed your entry with ranting/huge epic long comments XDD
...I can totally see all the Japanese teachers mimicking Squirtle's expression at the beginning of the school year at the thought of all the unsuspecting little newbies they get to CRUSH with homework. XDD
I have it four times a week as well, though I have one two-hour lecture and the rest are one-hour tutorials, which is where we get to practice the stuff we learn in lecture. Though usually new kanji and vocab get introduced in tutorial anyway -___-;;;
The kicker is that my prof speaks PERFECT English. She just chooses not to use it ._____.
It slows down in a fashion once you get to second year... I mean, because by then you know your hiragana/katakana/plain form (oh, you're going to have a ball with that one! Japanese is the only language I know where the casual way of speaking is MORE COMPLICATED than the polite one!) and particles fairly well, all you really have to worry about are the new sentence structures. It's the sudden influx of kanji that gets horrible. We're supposed to know over 500 kanji by the end of the year, and first year only teaches us the first 220, so it's like KANJI KANJI KANJI KANJI every couple of classes DX
Pffft, it's fine, I enjoy your long comments XDDD I'm a huge epic commenter myself, so it's all good!
OH and btw, the way I usually deal with the の particle is by making it the equivalent of the " 's " in English. So like, わたしの is like I + 's = My. Or デパートのうりば is department store + 's + uriba = the department store's sale corner (or, you know, whatever the literal translation is for uriba. I have a bad habit of forgetting the English translation sometimes DX).
I really really really need to get that Japanese character font thingy on my computer @_@
Thank you for that little tip XD I don't remember having any trouble with the no particle at least in high school, and it seems easy enough, I mean, it IS a possessive, but I'm still trying to remember everything so it's all '...okay, this should be insanely simple, why am I messing this up/is my brain shutting down?' XDD Oh I love particles @_@
...Now I know why I like being formal. Less complicated >>>>>>>>>>>> Moar complicated.
At least I know what I'll be doing during my 4 month summer, well, besides making sure I don't forget everything. *Will try to cram as many kanji into her head as possible* XDD At least Kanji is insanely fun to write! Or, it is now. I'd imagine once I get the list of all the kanji I'm supposed to know I'll be flailing, but still. XDDD
Though, best thing about the class? You and a ton of my other friends are taking Japanese, so I get knowledgeable tidbits from you when I spam you with long comments, and everyone else can feel smart when I ask them a ton of dumb questions. XDDD They're going to hate me when we start doing te forms. XD
Te form is not that bad, actually! Well, my prof last year had like a little song for us, so maybe that's why I remember it easily. Nai form is extremely annoying, though. And dictionary form also sucks. The best part? You need both (and another form) to be able to do casual style! Oh, Japan, how weird and twisted your language is. Have you done the hilarious mouthful type endings yet? Like nakerebanarimasen and shit? XDDD Those aren't hard, it's just hilarious to listen to everyone in class stumble and stutter over them. It took me a while to be able to say that one without going like "Watashi wa shukudai o shi...shinake...re...ba...NARIMASEN!!!". In my class right now we're doing the politer form of ~tekudasai, which is ~teitadakemasenka. It's beautiful how LONG Japanese is XDD
Lol if you ever wanna discuss the wonders of the Japanese language, I'm always happy to chat XDD I'm a huge language geek and can go on forever!
As much as I hate songs, I hope my Jap prof has one for us to because dangit they work!
Omg we definitely haven't gotten to them endings yet. We're having our first test on hiragana and introduction on Tuesday so I'm hoooooooping it'll be a while until we get to those. Funny thing, usually, like, when I'm being a nerd and singing along to the Naruto endings, I don't find the insanely long words that bad, but when it's in class, yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, omg it takes forever. XDD
Then again, that could also be due to the fact that in class we're reading hiragana whereas my lovely subtitled openings are in romaji. XDD
I will totally keep you from your studies one day by ranting about Japanese to you. One day, I'll be able to rant about Japanese in actual Japanese. That should be fun. XDDD
I can't wait until I know enough to mumble random phrases to myself. It's bad enough I almost do that with linguistics stuff. XDDD Yay for sounding like a crazy person! XDD
