I like my tattoos.
I have 2 tattoos and both are very meaningful to me.
On my upper back I have the one in the icon, a tree of life superimposed with a yin yang. Yes, I designed this myself. It was even done off of my drawing.
Both of these symbols are very significant to me in terms of my world view and such. I'm not a big word person, and they represent things that it's hard for me to really explain. And I put them together because I find them to be really complementary.
Yin yang is all balance and categories and stuff. Tree of life is all cycles and interconnectivity and stuff. But I also feel like all those words can be used in describing both symbols.
I chose the location initially because it just seemed right, but then I also went through a lot of spiritual work that had things about opening my heart and in particular the back of my heart. When I got the tattoo there I felt like I was putting something in place that would support the right balance of openness and protection.
On the left side of my chest is a braided infinity symbol. My husband has a matching tattoo in the same place. We got them when we did our vow renewal ReWedding on our 6th Anniversary.
When we first got married we had very long hair. During the ceremony we had our hair braided together and then the braid cut off. It's now framed hanging on our wall. Maybe you've seen it.
The whole thing was a surprise for everyone except our wedding party people. And most of them learned the night before at the rehearsal. We loved how shocked people were! While it was being braided, a lot of people thought it was cool, but were wondering what were we going to do now? When the officiant said, "As a sign of their devotion to one another, now let their hair be cut," there was an audible GASP from the audience. It was awesome.
So we wanted to do another kind of significant surprise thing, and somehow we hit upon matching tattoos. It was impractical to get tattooed during the ceremony, so we did it a week before or something like that, but again it was a secret from almost everyone. Then we revealed them during the ceremony.
It's funny how the tattoos are so much more permanent yet so much less shocking than braiding and cutting our hair.
So I suppose the braided infinity symbol is an obvious choice. The location too.
We told the tattoo artist what we wanted, and she drew it.
The same woman did both my tattoos. Rachel at True Blue. I love her. And her son goes to Jago's school. :)
