I went out on a couple of minor errands this morning (cat food, milk, spring water) and got hit upside of the eardrums by the wave of Xmas music now blaring out of almost all commercial sound systems everywhere. Sorry, O Wise Marketing Department, it doesn't make me want to buy anything, just leave as quickly as possible.
Mind you, I like some of the songs, but *in moderation*. I have even developed a greater appreciation for the lesser known pieces, since one of my co-workers at my frequent freelance gig makes an annual compilation CD of old, rare, and fun seasonal songs and gives them to everyone in the office. But -- those are the ones you rarely hear in the grocery aisle. Even Elvis has gotten scarce, alas!
I am looking forward to the Solstice, when some of my friends and I will be together, and will sing "Faunus, the Roman Goat God" (a rather scampy parody written by another bunch of friends) and then I'll feel better... because, among other things, I'll know that in just a few days the musical onslaught will be over.
