I smiled at him sadly and sighed.
*
(His eyes were the strangest color
I'd seen. Like the dust and the ground.)
*
I can't stay, I told him.
I can't just sit here waiting
For the dust to clear so we can be
Happy again.
We work so hard to survive.
And I've never known why.
*
(I've never been on my own,
I told him. I've always had my mother.
He smiled at me and I watched him
In his seat. Scenery flew by the window.
Trains make me nervous, he mumbled.)
*
I'll see you at the train station,
He mumbled.
*
(You have beautiful eyes, I said.
It was an awkward thing to say to another man.)
*
I won't be there; I'm not
Coming back.
*
(I'm on my way to a house I'm having
Built, he told me.
I'd love it if you'd join me there.)
*
His face crumpled and he turned to
Go back into the house.
He shut the door behind him.
