11. When a song first hits as a vidsong and you start it over to confirm it'll work and it DOES.
Vidding is a stupid hobby (so difficult! so technically oriented! so expensive!), but wow when you're at the peak moments, those moments are unstoppable. I have not had a desire to vid for months now, which has been really really weird for me. I started vidding in 2003, and I've wanted to vid almost every single day now for nine years. To go several months with a genuine lack of interest in vidding? That's just not right. (Admittedly, there has been plenty to take up that brainspace, both my evolving interest in photography and the many many things going on in my non-fannish life.)
But in the last week, I have felt that old flame burning again (thanks, Persuaders!) and so #11 on the 100 Things list is especially timely.
Songs always seem to hit me out of the blue. They can be brand new songs that pop up on the radio while I'm driving, or a song I've heard fifty times before on my Current Favorites playlist, but some alchemy happens when the right song and the right fandom are bouncing around in my head at the same time together. It's not conscious, but it's a whole process:
Step 1: Get that tingle in the back of my head that this would be a great vidsong
Step 2: Listen a little closer, and realize it would be perfect for X.
Step 3: Hit repeat. Listen with LASERLIKE FOCUS to every beat, lyric, and rhythmic moment with growing excitement.
Step 4: Hit repeat. Start having images flash in your head in time with beats/lyrics/rhythmic moments.
Step 5: Hit repeat. Flail madly. Try not to injure yourself or others in your enthusiasm.
Step 6: Email/text/go into chat/grab nearest person by the lapels and shout I HAVE THE GREATEST VID IDEA, LISTEN TO THIS, ISN'T THIS PERFECT FOR X?!?
(Then Step 7: Crash into despair because clipping takes so goddamn long to do, but this is a HAPPY post so we'll stop at step 6.)
I have had this lightning bolt realization for vid ideas literally hundreds of times, and I never get less excited. Every time it's like a whole new curtain has lifted, and I'm suddenly seeing my fannish world in a fresh way. You would not believe the number of mental vids I've got stored in my brainpan. Where's that brain-to-computer direct connect science fiction promised me?
