Soldier On by
secretlytodream (SPN) - Sam and Dean and death and life.
Very cool
gender-flipped casting post, also for Supernatural.
Last night I had a dream that I was LaDainian Tomlinson (EX-Charger *sniff*; I need to take a moment though to say "WTF THE JETS? What are you thinking, LT?" and wave goodbye and hope he gets a Super Bowl ring before he retires and also to give one last finger to the Chargers because they are really pissing me off these days) and I was teaming up with Hardison from Leverage and Elizabeth from White Collar. I'd like to point out that I haven't seen an episode of either show but I feel pretty confident about their dream characterization. Heh. There was a gunfight, and a ship, and running through an old building to escape the bad guys at one point. Very thrilling. I woke up before it was resolved, though.
Today I want to talk Children's Books. Well, baby books, I guess. I was reading Blue Hat, Green Hat by Susan Boynton to Puplet last night and decided today I wanted to talk about my favorite books we read to Puplet. These are the ones that are simultaneously very fun for us and also Puplet actually seems to enjoy them, too. Of course, Puplet loves ripping pages from magazines as a quality pastime, so his taste might be suspect. God bless board books!
Sandra Boynton has a bunch of great books, all of them board books, too, so he can nom on them while being read to. My favorites, besides the hat one (seriously, that turkey is ADORABLE), are:
The Going To Bed Book - we've read this so many times we pretty much have it memorized (please see subject line, for instance). Our #1 go-to sleepytimes book along with Goodnight Moon.
But Not The Hippopotamus - D'awwww. Poor hippo!
Then there are also:
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown - A classic for a reason. This is probably my favorite to read to Puplet, because it's got a nice rhythm, the visuals are cute, and there's enough space in it to add little embellishments as needed.
Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes - A simple, cute story with black & white pictures that really draw the very young's eye.
How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague - I love these dinosaur books so much. This is my favorite, and a perfect bedtime read.
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson & Jane Chapman - This one is really fun to read, plus all the animals get different voices, and the colors are very pretty.
Olivia by Ian Falconer - Olivia is my FAVORITE. I love the drawings, and she herself is super cute, and I love at the end where her mom is like (to quote Tarkio's "Trison and Isolde"): "God I love you, but you trouble me." Hee. So honest.
Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney - (Greatest last name ever?) This is a new one to Puplet's library but I've already read it twice. It's so much fun! And it's all about how Mama Llama is busy and Baby Llama keeps making a fuss and she tells him she loves him even if she's not always right there for him. Possibly I project a little! WHO KNOWS. Anyway: A+ book, in my top tier already.
We also have read some non-picture books with short-ish chapters, like Frog and Toad All Year, Peter Pan, and The Velveteen Rabbit, which AHH and I really enjoyed because neither one of us had read any of those before this. No, not even the Velveteen Rabbit. At least not that I remembered! That's a sweet story. I was a little freaked out it was going to go badly there at the end. Heh.
Also, we read the classic Pokey Little Puppy to Puplet the other day, after I had not read it since I was a child. That is one whacked-out story. I didn't remember ANY of that! I'm surprised at its longevity, honestly.
My all-time favorite books I can't wait to read with Puplet when he's older: Julie of the Wolves; Call of the Wild; and Where The Red Fern Grows (though I imagine I will have to make AHH read the end because otherwise I will cry and cry). I also want Puplet to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Watership Down, but those are probably better with him reading them himself. Also To Kill A Mockingbird. Those books are my mandatory reading list for him. *nods firmly*
And I leave you with a video of
dogs in slow-motion catching treats, via AHH. Happy Friday!
