And, yes to everything else. It's so about the characters, and you basically spend five seasons watching them eat breakfast, and it's brilliant.

That he gets kidnapped (or something) at some point and some bad stuff happens to him. I don't remember it particularly well, just that it happens.

Yeeeeah, that's what I thought you were referring to. It's a horrible, horrible, sadistic, uncomfortable episode, and I never want to watch it again. Except if I ever do a complete rewatch, I might force myself out of completism.

Yeah, I ended up reading the TWoP recap for some reason and remember the recapper going on about how awful it was and how stupid David was being. So.

My absolute favorite thing in the entire show is David and the Latino gangbanger. David not wanting to let him go at the end. Broke my heart in the best way.

That was such a beautiful moment, I love that, too. The show, at least in season 1, is filled with them.

Oh yeah, Ruth annoyed the shit out of me for so long, and then I loved her. I think it took longer for me than it has for you, though.

The moment I really started to adore Ruth was when she took the flower arrangement classes. I was just so happy that she didn't let it roll over her, that she took the initiative to follow-up on something she loved doing. It was a quick fall from there.
