First, today is the birthday of two wildly fabulous people:
coffeeandink and
sisabet! Happy birthday to both of you, and I wish you good books and cave-ins a-plenty on your natal day. :)
Second: It's Super Tuesday in America! If your state participates today, please vote. I don't care who you vote for (well, that's not true, I do care, but as we're a free country, vote for whomever you want!), please just exercise your right to vote. We're a country that is supposed to elect by the people, which means the people have to make the effort to get out there and vote. This year being a presidential election, voting is more critical than ever. /soapbox
In the spirit of the elections, here's a mini-poll (don't forget to pick up your "I voted!" sticker on the way out!):
(ETA: Ok, "squid" was right:
they played us for suckers!)
Poll Super Tuesday! Third, T-Rex has something to say about Casablanca:
This movie needs way more gay. *still snickering*
And last: my varied and jumbled thoughts on The Wire. Spoilers through 5x07. (OMG WHERE the last three episodes? *wants*)
McNulty, Lester, and Bunk - First of all, Bunk has been, for his rather limited screentime, amazing this season. I love him working the 22 bodies in the face of Jimmy's ridiculousness. And, ok, I admit that I also probably like Bunk better because I agree with him that what Jimmy is doing is stupid and dangerous. Yes, there is good coming out of it, and I appreciate that, but there is no way this is going to end other than badly. And they may not even GET Marlo. I'm not comfortable with the ends justifying the means in this situation, but I don't know what else they could have done, either. Still. I'm with Bunk for now. Heh.
I did like that - and laugh when - Lester jumped right on board Jimmy's wild ride. And that Jimmy was so frustrated with him needing more and better resources. I loved him recognizing that aspect of leadership, seeing the pain in the ass Lester could be. And holy shit, can we talk about how frigging hilarious that scene with Templeton was, where Jimmy realized he'd completely made up the phone call from the fake serial killer? I loved that.
Newspaper - The newspaper storyline, and rightfully so, has been more a chorus to the other stories. I love Gus. Love love love. The other characters are interesting but I'm not attached to them as I am to Gus, except for the sheer amount of hate I feel for Templeton and the two main editors. ESPECIALLY those two main editors, who let Templeton's purple op-ed piece run. Bah.
Carver, Herc, Daniels, Kima - I'm still angry at Herc, but at least he got Marlo's cell number to Carver. Carver is absolutely knocking me over with love the last two seasons, and he's been magnificent as the new sergeant in impossible situations. I'm glad that he wrote up that cop, for all the right reasons. The guy has been disrespectful and churlish from the beginning. Carver knows that. And he knows that morale is a lost cause anyway, so may as well try to force the police into behaving decently.
Kima has basically become Jimmy at this point, with the kid on off-days, the inability to put a bed together (Heeeee, that scene was a nice bit of humor), and her dedication to the job. Although she still has a core that Jimmy lacks, an optimism and freshness, I think, that Jimmy must have once had.
Daniels has been quieter this season, even as he's been thrust into the role of Deputy Commissioner, and I'm extremely impressed with how he's handled all of that pressure. I think he'd make a great Commissioner, honestly, if whoever comes after Carcetti actually keeps him. I'm glad he and Rhonda still seem happy, too.
Carcetti - Carcetti is...he's a big ball of frustration for me. He's jumping on the crime stuff with good intentions, but the cost to everything else is ridiculous, and he's so focused on becoming governor that Baltimore is dying underneath his feet and it's like he doesn't even care. I had bigger hopes for him, and it galls me that it's come to politics, as it always does. Gah.
Marlo, Snoop, and Chris (and the rest of the dealers) - Snoop continues to scare me in a way Chris doesn't, because I feel like we've seen Chris' humanity and not hers. I also like that Chris is more cautious than Marlo, that he thinks going after Omar is a bad idea, that he's worried about his family. I wish the co-op would go after Marlo, especially now that he flat-out admitted to killing Prop Joe, but I don't think they will because they don't have the contact with the Greek to get new product, and so they're stuck at Marlo's whim because he controls all the product. DAMMIT.
Omar - Watching him wrapping his leg up in that small bathroom, weak and sweaty and in tears, I was suddenly convinced Omar was going to die this season. It is the thing I least want (well, besides Bubbles dying), and yet I don't see how he's going to make it out. I can barely watch the screen whenever he's on now, hobbling and still badass, because I'm terrified of him getting killed, especially before he can exact revenge. If Simon wants to be as dark and dreary as I fear he can, I can see Omar being killed by some stupid punk before he even gets close. I really don't want that.
This bit from the TWoP recaplet of the fifth episode was pretty awesome, though:
So, just when things are looking bleak for Omar, he jumps out the window of this multi-story townhouse, and Marlo's hoods rush to the balcony, expecting to see Omar's corpse twitching on the ground. Only they don't see anything. So apparently Omar can fly. That would have been good knowledge to have earlier.
... But I think the most significant thing here is that Omar can fly. I mean, really -- who knew?
Heh.
