I'm still pondering over The Wire so for now I want to talk a bit about Charlie Jade, which we've been slowly watching. We've seen through episode 8 now and are picking up steam as we go on.
I think Charlie Jade is a show that benefits greatly from re-watching and discussion because a lot of the answers come near the end of the season.
To help you out though, I will say that Julian is in Beta, and those that work for Vexcorp move through the link, and while the link is down (due to Reena blowing up the one in Gamma) only 01 can move between Universes. Also, I got the impression that since 01's father is not a nice man, that he casts his mother in the angel role and holds on to that very strongly to help him deal with things.
I feel that the message about water would have been stronger if they hadn't taken out much of the science that was originally in the scripts, but the writers were very concerned about people being TOO confused.
OMG, seriously, I need icons. YES! But my copies of the episodes are of such poor quality that capping them would be a waste of time.
I can absolutely see how it benefits from re-watching. Just re-watching the Pilot when we started up again made a hundred times more sense of it, and as more details pile on, I'm guessing that gets more and more true. I really really like the show - and it seems chock full of fannish opportunity for fic, icons, and vids - I just feel like I need to see it all before I do anything! Heh.
Thanks for the info about Julian, that helps, and it makes sense within the framework of what we know.
You said the magic word, "VID". The only question left to answer is whether or not it will be a pre-vividcon vid, or a your-ass-has-to-wait-until-August vividcon vid????
As I have completely lost the ability to vid anything at all, it may be a "Here's my last vid of the year!" vid, if that. Also, I don't have a song for the show yet, but it's entered the mental data banks of possible source. Heh.
Now that we're more fully into the show, I'm realizing that there are opportunities for MOTW episodes on Charlie's behalf, and the show is exploiting that. I do like that Vexcorp has it's long, icky tendrils all over everything, though.
It's pretty interesting how they shift into the serial detective stories without every shifting focus away from the arc, because, as you say, Vexcor has its tentacles in everything.
It was really, really hard for me to watch what Reena went through in those early episodes, though I do think it's an accurate portrayal of the process of brainwashing, breaking down a person's sense of self. One thing those scenes did do, though, was impress me with the show's use of music; part of the process of breaking Reena down obviously involved using a musical cue to invoke fear and dread, and now when I hear that music (I like to call it the Slow Jazz of Torture--I'm sure you know what I'm talking about), I feel a little sick.
I never felt that they telegraphed the shift either. I didn't even recognize it until two episodes after they'd started, when it occurred to me that the previous storylines hadn't been followed up on.
I had serious problems watching the Reena scenes and, yes, the Slow Jazz of Torture makes me kind of sick and very uncomfortable.
It's an amazingly effective way of putting you in the headspace of a character, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen another TV show use music like that. The funny thing is that in and of itself, it's a catchy piece of music, in a Muzak sort of way, but I associate it with Reena's suffering as much as she does, and that's a shared experience I'm not used to having with TV characters. I'm watching the show with asta77 now, and it's all I can do to not flee the room when I hear those guitar licks start up.
A lot of people have been puzzled/annoyed/whatever about that Jasmine and Paula doppelganger thing, since there isn't anyone else who has one. But I will say this -- they aren't watching very carefully. This is why the lack of another season utterly kills me -- the hints of much more going on than we get in this one season, and the possibiities of even more verses. I get very upset. Anyway, you do really have to pay attention to the odd random character here and there.
As for travel between the verses, most people can't do it at will, and Julian is stuck there, for instance, because the link is down. But have you seen the men in the dark suits, especially the black man who moves in the shadows and Charlie sees in a great bit of mirror acting when he's in the car one night? I'm fairly certain he's been there by ep 8.
Now I read on wikipedia that they actually wrote scripts for a season 2 but were waiting for financing? Is that all a big lie? I've been avoiding wiki for the most part to keep from getting spoiled.
I'm really impressed with how deep the show's universe feels and how much potential there is in it. We've already done and seen so much in 10 episodes, but I feel like there's tons more. I have seen the men in the dark suits, including the black man, yes. Hm. Intriguing!

I'm sad about the lack of icons. SO SAD.

Well, it's really impossible to say anything to you at this point without completely spoiling you. So I sit and prepare to 'splode.
