IJVP - Day 7! "Lunatic Fringe" (Supernatural)

Jan 18, 2007 12:27

Welcome to Day 7 of IJVP. (It's not really "day" 7, but I'm just going with that.)

The seventh vidlet was suggested by cindermom, it's a Supernatural vid to Red Rider's, "Lunatic Fringe."

For those of you who are just here for the vids - please right-click and 'Save Target As.'

Lunatic Fringe (18 MB DivX AVI)

Please let me know if you're unable to play the vidlet.

Lyrics
Lunatic Fringe - in the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season, but you won't get too far

We can hear you coming - no, you're not going to win this time
We can hear the footsteps out along the walkway

Can you feel the thunder?

My Thoughts; What Works; What Doesn't
I really like this vid. I think it's another one that would benefit from more time to finesse the idea, especially since I had to cut 20 seconds out of the song after I'd laid 2/3 of the vid because I couldn't get my idea to extend without going on a tangent and making everything really confusing. Basically the idea was meant to be Winchesters vs. Yellow-Eyed Demon. There is not as much source for that as I thought. (I mean there is, but you can't always tell. Sometimes it's them just standing there looking angsty.)

It didn't turn out as sexy as I had wanted, but the Winchesters bring a lot of that to the table for me. Heh. My favorite part is the beginning where they're each introduced. I love that stillshot effect and the slow fade on the guitar. I also like the overlay of the gun barrel on the shot of Dean picking up the gun; when the music picks up at 00:42 with Sam rolling; and the "thunderrrrr" ending from 00:59 on.

The intro of the boys' history is, I think, more filler than I would have liked, but it was at least intended to set up the theme. Anything straying from the Winchesters and the Yellow-Eyed Demon didn't seem to work as well (like the Meg stuff).

What I Learned
Perserverance is the watchword of the day. I worked a long day yesterday and then ripped source for this vid last night and sat down this morning and almost decided to not do any of the things I wanted to try, especially when they didn't work on first attempt. But fiddling - with effects, clip choice, clip position, even the song itself - is important to making the vid cohesive and some of the fiddling I did today ended up being well worth it. I used a 'Find Edges' filter on the clip of demon!John at 00:41; I used a lot of duplicated clips set to screen to lighten this fairly dark show; and I used composite mode overlay for the clip with Dean holding the gun at 00:32.
