I had a fantastic time at the concert last night. Although I just need to say that if you go to a concert, go to listen to the music, not to talk through the whole damn thing. Jesus.
That's going to be hard, since the song dates back to at least 1666. ;)
I am trying to think of the first time I heard it. A Joan Baez album, maybe? Although I think I read it before I heard it. I know it's mentioned in The Sherwood Ring which is this YA fantasy about ghosts from the Revolutionary War; a man sings it to the girl he's flirting with. I love that book.
Oh! I am listening now and this is really a very different orchestration than I am used to.
God, SERIOUSLY. Also, the people who giggle uncontrollably RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A--oh, wait. ;) But no, seriously. The talking is annoying.
Thank you for the mp3s, and I'm glad you had such a good time!! I'd love to catch a show at the Showbox sometime; I've heard a lot about what an awesome venue it is. And hee! Audience participation! Excellent. :)
Hey that giggling at least had very good reason. Not that I can remember exactly what it was now, but at the time, it was hysterical.
The Showbox has a lot of good bands, too. *checks schedule* Oooooh, Stars is going to be there on Feb 8! I like them. And Flogging Molly is going to be there Mar 7. Oh gosh, and Beth Orton on March 28! Awesome.
Haha, nice pimp post! I'm glad you enjoyed. I don't think I'll go see him solo down here (goldenvoice is doing it and I hate them fascists), but I'm glad to see him getting out. That's how I first met/saw him, you know? He wasn't "...of the Decemberists", he was just "Colin Meloy, quirky singer/songerwriter." And cutie, of course.
I can't resist aping your statement of "if you haven't given the Decemberists a try..." because, haha ... seriously, you shouldn't bother. My prediction is that you aren't going to be able to get AWAY from the Decemberists in about a year. They're going to be everywhere, like Death Cab. And I will try not to flinch. And I hope they all make a billion zillion dollars and get out with their precious souls intact.
You may have seen this already, but at the same time I was reading your post, I had another window opened up to Bookslut, where they had a link to an interview with Colin Melowy.

Flogging Molly! That would be fun. Mr. McK would be all over that.

Of course. I didn't know that was how you first met him.

That's my hope for them, too. I'm optimistic.

Yes, Pimp Post! He was pimped to me by finnigan_geist long ago, and I haven't gone a day since without listening to them.
Oh, Laura Veirs! Love her. I can upload her CD and a few extra songs if you don't already have them and want a listen to.

I'd be curious to hear a couple of Laura Veirs songs. Maybe recommend two or three of your favorites?
