IJVP - Day 10!

Jan 18, 2006 19:28

Guess what I'm doing tonight! Going to see Colin Meloy in concert. Woooooooo! Which is why I chose to do today's vidlet today, otherwise it would have been the perfect way to end the IJVP. Today's vidlet was suggested by eva_mac, it's a Buffy vid to ABBA's "Thank You For The Music."

For those of you who are just here for the vids - please right-click and 'Save Target As.' The file is DivX AVI.

Thank You For The Music (18 MB)

Please let me know if you're unable to play the vidlet.

Lyrics
I've been so lucky
I am the girl with golden hair
I wanna sing it out to everybody
What a joy, what a life, what a chance

Thank you for the music
the songs I'm singing
thanks for all the joy
they're bringing
Who can live without it
I ask in all honesty
What would life be
without a song or a dance what are we
so I say thank you for the music
for giving it to me

My Thoughts; What Works; What Doesn't
So. Irony is the watchword of the day. At least I think it's irony - m-w.com says irony is "the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning," and that's what I did in a lot of these clips. Because even the "without a song or a dance what are we" moments are supposed to be brief bright moments in otherwise unhappy (at that point) relationships. Everything is not made better with singing and dancing, no matter how much we wish that to be true.

I'm really, really happy with this vidlet. It makes me laugh, it makes me sad for Buffy, it gives me little goosebumps of closure at the end because I'm a dork. Hee. I'm not happy with the scary ghost!Buffy in the graveyard - that effect looked a lot better in my head. And I feel like some of the clip choices are a bit stale or off, most notably the team walk on "who could live without it." I also think I cut in too soon on Anya's face in the "for giving it" section. And the credits I waver on; I like them, but I'm not sure if it's too soon to repeat the end phrase. I'm not sure.

I think what's most interesting about this vid compared to yesterday's, which is much more complex and probably a "better" vid, is my expectation of each vid. This is exactly what I expected out of this idea, so I'm really happy with it. "Orbiting Jupiter" is a good vidlet, but I just was so caught up in my expectation of what it should be that I couldn't see past that. (Thank you, by the way, for the very kind comments on that one.)

What I Learned
Masks, masks, masks. I used image mask for the ghost!Buffy scenes, keyframed to try to stay with that pillar. I used "Mask Shape" and moved center points for the split screens. For the Mustard Dance scenes, I just zoomed out and shifted the center point for each clip through the motion tab. For the first clip, I keyframed an HSL filter, saturation from -100 to 0. For the last clip I used a Page Peel transition. For the scene of Buffy walking alone I changed the Gamma level, a little too much from the looks of it.

I have to get going or I'll miss the opening act.
