We're back on track today. I don't currently foresee not being able to do one-vid-a-day for the remainder, but work is shaping up to be nightmarish this week, so the choice may be taken out of my hands. I'll do my best.
Today's vidlet was suggested by
xanphibian, it's an Angel vid to Muse's "Sing For Absolution."
For those of you who are just here for the vids - please right-click and 'Save Target As.' The file is DivX AVI.
Sing For Absolution (11 MB) Please let me know if you're unable to play the vidlet.
Lyrics
lips are turning blue
a kiss that can't renew
I only dream of you
my beautiful
sing for absolution
I will be singing
falling from your grace
our wrongs remain unrectified
and our souls won't be exhumed
My Thoughts; What Works; What Doesn't
This vid was another one where I completely recut the song the day I vidded it. My original version was even less cleanly cut together (and this one has its problems), and didn't end very well. It also was difficult to find a story for, where this version was a little easier. Not that there is a narrative of any sort. This is a mood piece, which is different for me. It is freeing to not have to tell a distinct narrative, I must say. If you're wondering, overall this is about Wes' weird guilt with Illyria. He likes her, he hates her, she's Fred, she's not Fred, it's a jumble.
Overall I like this vid. My favorite part is definitely the intercutting of Wes hitting the sarcophagus and him taking care of her when she was sick. While part of it is meant to be his anger at Illyria, it's also supposed to represent his anger at Fred as well. (And in a way, you can almost see the five stages of grief progressing through the vidlet - well, you have to really squint for 'bargaining' but you could do it. Not that I intended that at all when I was making it, it was something that just occurred to me now.) I think the last scene with the echoing works well, and while I like the quick cuts right before it, I'm afraid I lose the strong Wes POV and it becomes almost an Illyria POV which was not my intention. I tried to shove Wes back into it at the end, but I don't think it worked.
The red blurring on the "taking care of Fred" clips didn't work as well as I'd hoped. The whole first section I am really not sure how I feel about. I like it and think it sets up the hypnotized sort of mood I was going for, but I don't think they're exactly right, either. Although there is some cool movement matching going on in one instance, and I think the blurring of some of the clips helps make it less visually confusing.
What I Learned
For the first and last sections, I just overlaid clips and dropped the opacity (keyframe for the first section, just one opacity for the last section). I used gaussian blur set to 7 for the blurred first clips, and keyframed the last one from 7 to 0 on the shot of Illyria looking up at the sky on "my beautiful." I used Channel Blur set to Red for the fuzzing on the "taking care of Fred" clips, fuzz set to either 26 or 44 depending on how red the clip itself actually was. I used gamma correction on a number of clips to make them lighter. And I think that was it.
I will talk about Wonderfalls later, but I really loved the last episode. At some point I also hope to talk about our day at the SciFi Museum, and maybe hit the high points on SG-1, SGA, and BSG. Not to mention my first priority which is to comment on the IVPs of
f1renze,
dualbunny, and
pipsqueaky! And respond to the wonderfully thoughtful comments on my own IJVP posts. But right now I have to rip source for the rest of my projects. Eep.
