Welcome to Day 2 of the IJVP.
Today was AHH's birthday, so I didn't have nearly as much time as I'd like to work on this vidlet. I actually had selected to do this idea on this day because I thought it would be easy - the song is perfect for the pairing and the clips really seem to lay themselves. And that was true, except its very ease is what made it incredibly difficult to find something new (for me) to do with the source. I probably should have saved this for the "My Thoughts" section. :)
Today's vidlet was suggested by
wolfling, it's an Angel vid to Alanis Morisette's "Head Over Feet."
For those of you who are just here for the vids - please right-click and 'Save Target As.' It's DivX AVI.
Head Over Feet (6 MB) Please let me know if you're unable to play the vidlet.
Lyrics
I had no choice
but to hear you
You stated your case
time and again
I thought about it
You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath
and the door for me
Thanks for your patience
You've already won me over
in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall
head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you
for all that you are
I couldn't help it
it's all your fault
My Thoughts; What Works; What Doesn't
So you saw my thoughts above, on how the idea was so right, and so very much an idea I would have had myself, that it made it very difficult to do for IJVP, since the goal is to try new stuff. I wasn't sure what I could use that would work with this song and idea, and I'd been wanting to try out some of the masking abilities of FCP, so I decided now was the time to introduce myself to them. I think the masking effect where it split-screens works really well. The four-screen ending doesn't work that well, but I've always wanted to try that, so I figured why not, since it was supposed to represent Cordy overwhelmed by Doyle's awesomeness.
I also played around with color, blue in the quieter more rhythmic sections; then switch to a goldenish color once the chorus really starts up. I like how it turned out, but I think it would be even stronger with some sort of a glow to it, not just the coloring.
This is one of the songs I had trouble cutting so the cuts weren't obvious. The cuts are obvious here, but I hope they're not obnoxiously so. I begin to lose perspective when I hear them over and over and over. And I'm pretty sure the aspect ratio is off, but I couldn't figure it out and I was falling asleep at the keyboard, so if I have extra time this coming weekend, I'll fix it.
What I Learned
For the coloring, I used RGB Channels, with adjustments to all three (Red, Green, Blue). I lowered red (highlights and midtones), and raised green and blue highlights and midtones. I didn't touch the blacks on any of them. For the chorus sections, I lowered the blues and raised the reds and greens, mostly the greens.
For the masking, I used Four-Point Garbage Matte, with the points moved appropriately, set to Invert, feather set at 39, and the whole image centered to the right on the Motion tab. For the second masked clip, to get rid of the remaining black stripe running down the middle of Cordy's face, I used a Mask Shape set to rectangle, horizontal scale 81, vertical scale 127, which worked beautifully.
For the four-square at the end, I simply changed the scale of each clip and then changed the center point on the Motion tab for each clip.
I am very sleepy. We watched "Lovesick Ass" tonight. Still very much enjoying Wonderfalls, but too distracted to put together any coherent thoughts.
Muffin Buffalo - I think these are out-of-order on the DVDs, because there is a clip in the "previouslies" for MB that comes from BB. This was the last of the episodes I had seen before, and I remembered it pretty vividly. It stood up well to a second viewing, though, because so much of it was not about what twists Jaye's help would take (which I think if the show had lasted multiple years, they would have had to do something about, because that would get old after awhile, I think) but rather her interaction with other people, and whenever Jaye actually gets outside of herself, it's a great episode.
Barrel Bear - I really enjoyed this episode a lot. I didn't see the twist with Millie and the fake-out coming, nor did I think she would actually die! I was really pleased with this episode all the way through; I love that Mahandra had a bigger role and I liked Jaye using the stuffed bear's barrel for Millie's ashes. Very good, all around.
Lovesick Ass - Eric's actually really hot in this episode. That's pretty much all I've got right now.
G'night!
