Mt. Dora Bible: 7 @ HOLY TRINITY: 43
Tigers ruin Mt. Dora's debut
MELBOURNE - Mount Dora Bible, playing its first varsity football game in school history, fell victim to a vicious Holy Trinity defnese and potent running game as the Tigers rolled to a 43-7 win Friday.
Holy Trinity defensive back Dane Holloway recorded three interceptions and two touchdowns, and the offense unveiled a formidable rushing attack led by quarterback Rock Contardi and running backs L.T. Toland and Kyle Christiano.
On the Tigers' opening drive, Mount Dora's Kyle Cork picked off a Contardi pass and returned it 66 yards for the game's first score -- also Mount Dora's first TD in school history.
That miscue had Holy Trinity coach John Thomas thinking twice about not playing a Kickoff Classic game last week.
"We were very sloppy,"Thomas said. "We had no focus or intensity. We need to pick it up a lot."
Despite 24 first-half points, the Tigers were stalled by 11 penalties and had two rushing scores by Contardi and C.J. Lawler negated by penalties. The Bulldogs were equally sloppy, committing nine penalties and generating minus yardage against the Holy Trinity defense.
Like the Bulldogs, the Tigers used their defense to get them into the end zone first. Defensive back Tom Taylor recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, and Toland's conversion run gave Holy Trinity an 8-7 lead at 4:11 in the first quarter.
After a series of miscues, the Tigers exploded behind Contardi and Toland.
Contardi's 39-yard TD run with 30 seconds left in the first quarter gave Holy Trinity a 16-7 margin.
The second quarter featured the officials, as both teams were flagged a combined 13 times. The only scoring was a Contardi-to- Holloway pass with 3:33 remaining in the half, boosting the Tigers' halftime lead to 24-7.
Christiano, a transfer from Satellite, scored his first touchdown as a Tiger at 7:09 in the third quarter on a 4-yard run, increasing the lead to 30-7.
Holloway intercepted quarterback Lorenzo Darius' pass at the 19 and returned it for a score to make it 36-7.
A 5-yard Christiano run with 2:45 left in the quarter closed the scoring.
Contardi led all rushers with 133 yards on 11 carries. Toland added 107 on 12 carries. Defensively, T.J. Rennie led the Tigers with 11 tackles.
