As the economy tanked a couple years ago and we looked at our sad employment situation, we decided to focus out efforts on working in the public sector. More stability, more security, we thought.
Oh, well.
As a recent hire in the Hays school district, Louise has to worry about whether hers will be one of the 100 jobs the district announced they were going to have to cut. She survived the first round, and the word around the district is that more cuts are going to come from just not filling naturally-occurring vacancies. So far, so good.
At the IRS, the managers are making contingency plans for the possible Government Shutdown that is being threatened by Congress next Friday. The last time this actually happened (1995 or so), the employees who were sent home ended up eventually getting paid for the time missed. Plus, the paperwork will keep coming anyway, so if we do get sent home, there will be plenty of overtime opportunities upon our return.
Not so lucky? Ben. The eldest stepson wrapping up his first year teaching 5th grade in Nacogdoches got told this week that his contract will not be renewed due to budget cuts. Not sure what he's going to do, and I suspect neither is he.
