Ok so it turns out that MMO's are addictive. Who knew? Well it turns out that an addictive personality combined with an addictive element such as an MMO and then mixed with the inability to make decisions results in the following.
- Two years ago I played my first MMO -> Planetside...quit fairly quickly
- One year ago I played FFXI - One month
- Three weeks ago I got Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach - Still active
- Last weeks I purchased RF (Rising Force) Online. - Still active
- 5 Days ago I played WoW (Cracked servers). Got bored faster than I have with any of the aforementioned.
- Last weekend I played Guild Wars: Factions Free weekend preview
- and yesterday I purchased FFXI: The Vana'Diel collection..in anticipation of the new expansion coming out.
Here is my review -
WoW - The server was cracked and there was no level limit, each kill got you a level...and the graphics were kinda dull. I'm a little bit shallow like that sometimes ^_^
RF Online - Cross between FF and Robotech. Lots of fun, but some of the korean hasn't been translated properly and the controls take some hefty prayer just to learn. Oh and lots of PvP quite similar to Planetside, but with Magic.
Dungeons and Dragons Online - Graphically comparable to some of the newer FPS to come out, storyline was pretty solid (based on an actual campaign for crying out loud). However there is a level 10 Level cap and all the action is Dungeon crawling. SO unless you are into that, and the eye candy is enough to grab you, I'd avoid it for a while.
Planetside - Was fun, lots of PvP. But meh.
Guild Wars Factions - The preview weekend had you start out at Level 20 so you had to pick a second class. The mobs you run into to begin with are ones that will kill you in one hit. I didn't have long to evaluate, but graphically it was more impressive than WoW, but not quite DDO.
FFXI - Maybe I'm just biased or something, but this game is graphically decent (not quite WoW though =[) Loaded with tons of content, a ton of character development (Prestige Classes, etc), rich environs (Mobs everywhere you look, and cities full of things to do.)
Content wise....well lets just say that I've basically quit every one of the other MMO's and have gone back to FFXI. Its not a game for people that just want hack and slash, you have to be a fan of MASSIVE questing and storyline development. Although I have spent hours upon hours simply doing hack and slash in it myself.
And apparently they've ported it to the Xbox 360 as well.
I'll probably go back to DDO or RF for a while once they develop a little more, but for now its FFXI for me!
