Pitch-a-week part the Somethingth: L'Abisso

I tried to like 7th Sea. The game had a lot of heart, some fantastic imagery and a ridiculous amount of range. At the end of the day, though, it cast its net too far. I didn't want to play "A Scottish highlander, a Cossack and a courtier from the court of the Sun King walk into a bar." I wanted to play this picture.

Thus, 7th Sea with everything ( Read more... )

I thought 7th Sea was a little ridiculous because you weren't supposed to kill people. Because your characters were supposed to be "good guys." I mean...what? What?!?

Also, I never could figure out that fucking combat system.

Weren't supposed to kill people? I must've missed that somewhere. I thought that swashbuckling fiction, by definition, was all about cutting down the opposition with an off-hand bon mot.

But, yeah. Loved some aspects of it (the pure creepiness of Porte sorcery, for one... "To teleport from here to my home, I rip a bleeding hole in the side of the universe and walk back. Blind. Otherwise, I'll get pulled into Hell. Buh-bye!"), didn't much dig the rules and wasn't fond of the spread. Vodacce was plenty big enough for the game. Thus, this.

I'm pretty sure I remember this from somewhere in the player's guide. You didn't shoot your opponent dead, you knocked him out and tied him up or otherwise temporarily incapacitated him. Or something.

I agree with the cool factor of the Vodacce. 'Course, I LARPed a Toreador, so what can you expect.

Also, Venice. Mmmm.

I read once that Wick had actually wanted Vodacce to be the entire game, but was pressured by Alderac to create a larger, more varied game world. Because god forbid you only offer one flavor to gamers!

Seems like that happened quite a bit with Alderac. I recall you telling me that Legend of the Five Rings was supposed to just be about samurai originally. By the time the splats came out, I'm pretty sure you could play heroic noodle cooks and origami artists.
